Hermannsburg lies between Greytown and Kranskop on the R74. It is situated in an
extremely picturesque area of mountains, valleys and next to the Hlimbitwa River.
There are beautifully preserved meadows which abound in wild flowers, even the rare
Hilton Daisy, and a great variety of birds fly around. Explore the area on horseback
or do the trails on foot. Accommodation is available in nearby Bed and Breakfasts
or in the school boarding establishment during school holidays.
Hermannsburg became
the base, where the Lutheran missionaries, sent out from Germany by Pastor Louis
Harms, learnt the Zulu language before they departed for the appointed mission stations.
In the 1860s they started training Zulu Pastors. If you visit the Mission House Museum
you will follow the historical footsteps and learn about the first missionaries and
settlers. There is a story behind every display, e.g. why long pipes were introduced.
The Mission House Museum and the village church, Peter Paul Lutheran Church both
have monumental status since 1977.
The missionaries and settlers married and had children.
